'Akia is endemic to Hawaii and is found on Kaua’i, O’ahu, Maui, Lana'i, and Moloka'i islands. Although 'Akia is not found abundantly in the wild, it is one of the most popular native plants used in private and commercial landscaping in Hawaii. As with most native plants, Hawaiians had many cultural uses for the 'Akia plant. The two most common uses were using the stringy bark for cordage and using the mashed-up plant to catch fish. Hawaiian fishermen would mash the bark, roots and leaves, then drop the mixture into tidepools. The fish would eat it and become mildly stunned enough to allow the fishermen to catch them easily.
